Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends on your insurance. Physical Therapy is now direct access across all 50 states (with some limitations). Fortunately, in the state of Oregon, for those with commercial insurance (not Medicare or Medicaid), you may come to see Dr. Akhgar, PT, DPT without a physician’s referral. If you have Medicare or Medicaid, you need a physician’s referral. This may come from your primary care provider, or even an urgent care provider.

  • All appointments are 60 minutes. If you arrive late to your appointment, you will have less time. For example, if your appointment starts at 1:00pm and you arrive at 1:15, you will only have 45 minutes for your appointment. If you are more than 20 minutes late to your appointment, your appointment will be cancelled.

  • This varies widely based on your injury/condition, and your goals. During your first visit Dr. Akhgar, PT, DPT will give you a rough idea of how many visits you may need. This can be subject to change as you progress (i.e. you may not end up needing all of the proposed visits, or you might end up needing a few more).

In general, my Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy provides me with the knowledge to know when a patient needs to be referred to a specialist.

  • Clothing: Come in clothes that you feel comfortable moving around and exercising in. Ideally, these clothes allow me to see and feel the body part and surrounding areas. For example, when coming in for a lower body injury, shorts are preferable to leggings, however I will never make you wear something you are not comfortable in.

Exercise equipment: If you have been given any supplies from your therapist such as an exercise band or ball, please bring these to your sessions; they are cut/designed to your specifications. Your first exercise band of a specific color is free, however you will be charged for subsequent bands of the same color.

Forms: If you have a referral, surgical notes, imaging, or any other notes from another provider that you feel may be pertinent to your care, please bring these. Note: I cannot accept imaging that is on a CD ROM.

  • Please consider the following (it is ok not to know it all exactly):

    1. How long have you had your pain/symptoms?

    2. What specifically makes your symptoms better or worse?

    3. Medication (prescribed and over the counter supplements) list

    4. All surgical history

  • Face masks may be required in the future based off of CDC and OHA guidelines. At this time patients at Fit For Life Physical Therapy must wear a face mask if they are unvaccinated against COVID 19 and influenza, and/or are experiencing symptoms of an upper respiratory condition. Your provider will likely wear a mask throughout your visits even if you are unmasked.
